Instructor-led training (ILT) has been a popular way for businesses to train large groups of employees on everything from soft skills to management and leadership training, but with the recent downturn in the economy and increased travel costs, businesses are finding it more difficult than ever to send employees to face-to-face training. Budget cuts paired with increased workloads for workers further the inefficiency and inconvenience. Not surprisingly, workers are becoming more proactive when seeking answers to their on the job questions, frequenting search engines in hopes of finding the information they need to get the job done. With the proliferation of search engines and social networking, people are becoming increasingly dependent on tribal knowledge and “on-demand” learning; finding what they need, when they need it. Of course, information is not education. Well-designed online learning can enable people to learn at their own pace, developing their knowledge and skill, right from their desktop or mobile device.
What is good e-Learning?
Often, organizations turn to classroom style, “talking head” videos and expert-based presentations to provide essential training. While on-going employee development and training is critical for businesses to succeed and develop its most valuable resources, employees, these types of training sessions often lack the opportunity for learners to reflect, practice, and apply the concepts. In addition, these presentation-style events tend to be very passive, requiring only that the audience remain awake. Learners today expect more engagement and interactivity and often need to participate in “try me” exercises throughout and immediately following the instruction to understand and retain the learning.
So what is effective online learning?
There are many technology buzzwords swirling around online learning today, whether it’s Second Life, Alternate Reality, Game-Based Learning or micro-learning. Digitec has been designing and producing eLearning since the 1990s, and we believe that the basic premise for effective learning design is to match the level of engagement with the learning objectives. If the primary objectives for a course are largely awareness, then a 3-D immersive game world is probably not a good match, and a waste of money. Similarly, if the course needs to teach skills-based procedures, then a narrated PowerPoint® presentation is not adequate.
You’ve probably heard the term “content is king.” If you start today, creating truly engaging eLearning for your employees, they will appreciate the higher quality and become more productive and valuable employees for your organization in the future.
